Socotra October Season - Standard Itinerary
The first trip of the season is usually our Standard trip, and the first fishing week of October is usually a very high peak in terms of fishing, the sea calms down and the fish are still very aggressive from the rough conditions of the monsoon. Usually every year over this trip we land several 50+ and many big fish, but this year the luck turned, unusual cold weather for the season, wind, and a very slack tide for the week made the conditions much harder than expected.
For GT fishing we had to fish very early in the morning to fish the only short window of activity, and we were fairly successful with a few 40s and one 50 kg class fish caught by our friend Pek from Singapore. On the bad side, we have also been reefed and cut off by some big fish, especially two very big ones that swallow the lures and cut the leader after a long fight. On top we also had some bycatch, the main highlight was an Indo-Pacific Permit of 5 kg caught by Damien on a 140 gr sinking stick bait, plus different other species on topwater and jigging.
Overall the first 2 days were windy, as the weather picked up and the temperature felt warmer for a couple of days, but then Suddenly, the weather turned again and the second last day was tough and the last day tough to be at sea. In general, not what we expected based on our historical data, but we still managed to land 50kg, a few 40s, a few 30s, lost some big fish, and caught other species, so the trip was well-wrapped in the end.
